Preaching was never meant to be a tradition or a time-filler. God chose to use the “foolishness of preaching” to change lives (1 Corinthians 1:18-21). Sadly, one of the great hindrances to Bible preaching today is that we do not know how to effectively listen to preaching.
1 Corinthians 1:18-21
“(18) For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. (19) For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. (20) Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? (21) For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”
Consider the following before next Sunday:
1. Prepare Ahead of Time – An unprepared listener sets himself up to be a careless listener. Instead, confess known sin ahead of time and ask God to speak to you through His Word.
2 Chronicles 20:33
“Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.”
2. Attend In-Person – There are no substitutions for able-bodied Christians being obedient.
Hebrews 10:25
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
3. Follow Along in Your Bible – Preachers make mistakes, but God’s Word is without error!
Acts 5:29, Acts 17:11, 1 Corinthians 11:1, Ephesians 5:1
Acts 5:29 “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.”
Acts 17:11 “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”
1Cor. 11:1 “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”
Eph. 5:1 “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;”
4. Remove Any Distractions – Focusing on God is a choice! Unplug from technology, take small children to the nursery, and sit toward the front.
Psalm 119:15, Luke 8:5-18
Psa. 119:15 “I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.”
Luke 8:5-18 “(5) A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. (6) And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. (7) And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. (8)And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. (9) And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? (10) And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. (11) Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. (12) Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. (13) They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. (14)And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. (15) But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. (16) No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. (17) For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. (18) Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.”
5. Take Notes to Review Later – Sermons do not change lives, Bible truth does!
Acts 17:11, Romans 10:17, James 1:25
Acts 17:11 “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”
Rom. 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
James 1:25 “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
6. Make a Personal Decision – EVERY Bible message must bring its listeners to a personal decision: “What will I do with Bible truth?”
Psalm 38:18, James 1:22-25, 1 John 1:9
Psa. 38:18 “For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.”
James 1:22-25 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (23) For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: (24) For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. (25) But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
1John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
7. Share How God Worked in You – Tell the preacher how God worked in your heart. It will encourage the preacher and it will help you solidify your decision.
Psalm 26:6-7, Psalm 107:2, Luke 8:39
Psa. 26:6 “I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O LORD: (7) That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.”
Psa. 107:2 “Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;”
Luke 8:39 “Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.”
